Toxic Shower! This is the winning title of the 2009 Best Environmental Program in a Documentary Contest held last September 24, 2009 at the DDC Audio-Visual Room. The documentary dwelt on the harmful effects of aerial spraying in banana plantations on humans and the environment. The Academic Support Services (ASS) is pleased to present the 2009 output of the Best Environmental Program in a Documentary, a program to meet and produce short documentary films about issues relating to the environment, global warming and sustainable development.

Dubbed as the Think Green Project, the documentary contest was started in September 2008 during the Foundation Anniversary of Davao Doctors College. The project was originally conceived and inspired by the DDC President, Dr. Rizalina Mitra-Pañgan who is an environment enthusiast herself. Participants were student-members of the departmental and non-departmental organizations of the college.

In the afternoon of September 24, the Audio-visual Room seemed like a small theater during the viewing of the documentary entries. Dr. Pangan, students, faculty and some non-teaching personnel took time out to witness the video presentations.

For this year's contest, five entries were judged as follows: 1st Place: Toxic Shower (CASBE-Psychology Dept.); 2nd Place: Langaw sa Kahapsay (CASBE-Biology Dept.); 3rd Place: Gapnod (Optometry Dept.); and Consolation Prizes for both Astig (Young Environmentalist School Org.) and Bahay ni Lila (Debating Society).

Invited as Chairman of the Board of Judges was Mr. John Paul S. Seniel, a Senior Correspondent of the GMA News and Public Affairs, acclaimed as Best Director and Best Screen Writer in several docufilms (2003-2007) one of which was officially selected and shown in New York Video and Film Festival in 2005.

Other members were Ms. Haydee C. Bernabe, the Public Affairs Officer for Cental and South Mindanao for Smart Communications and Mr. Ricardo N. Obenza, Jr., the Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Kinaiyahan Foundation, Inc. and President of the Calinan Socio-Ecological Development Organization (CASEDO).

The Committee chaired by Dr. Lucila T. Lupo and co-chaired by Mr. Romel L. Tambis commended all participants, their advisers and Ms. Nerissa M. Gravino, SSO President for another job well done. Gratefully acknowledged is SMART as co-sponsor of the project.
