James Dominic G. Gallego (BSN 4) and Ann Murielle C. Gomez (BS Psych 1) made it to the Grand Finals in the 1st Inter-school Newscasting Competitions sponsored by ABS-CBN Davao.
Gallego and Gomez, two of the three bets of Davao Doctors College, qualified in the Grand Finals after showing their prowess in newscasting in the Semi-final round last January 22, 2010 in the afternoon at the SM City Activity Centre.
Prior to the semi-finals, a school level screening was done with 27 students from the three colleges. Ten (10) emerged to qualify in the school level competitions. With the help of ABS-CBN staff, Mr. Ad Roel Alcober, Chief News Editor, Ms. Michelle Robin, Executive Producer, and our very own Directors, Dr. Maria Leah F. Villano and Ms. Angelica L. Torres, three of the 10 were chosen to vie in the semi-finals.
Chosen as semi-finalists were Romeo Urgel, Jr., also a BSN 4 student together with James Dominic Gallego and Ann Murielle Gomez.
Ten colleges and universities participated in the semi-finals held last January 22-23, 2010 at the SM City Activity Centre this city. Each institution had three contestants who were students from various courses such as Mass Communication, Education, Nursing, Psychology and the like. There were thirty contestants classified into two brackets by draw lots. The first 15 where Gallego and Gomez belonged competed on January 22 while Urgel, Jr. joined the other 15 on the next day. Only the top six from each bracket qualified for the grand finals slated in mid February 2010.
Gallego and Gomez will compete with ten more potential newscasters from Ateneo de Davao University, University of the Immaculate Conception, Holy Cross of Davao College, Cor Jesu College in Digos City, MATS, University of Southeastern Philippines and University of Mindanao.
